Teaser: Day of the Dead

The Grateful Dead was the ultimate jam band. They would tour around America and fans would follow them to every show, sometimes seeing hundreds of their concerts, and each one would be different. Being a jam band meant extended solos, and that would mean the songs would stretch out to be sometimes twenty minutes long.

On May 20th, 2016, a compilation album of covers will be released.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band

As a follow-up to the sad death of the “fifth Beatle” – George Martin, here is the Rolling Stone article stating why it is the best rock and roll album of all time.

You may find that due to formatting, you might end up reading about the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds first, coming in at number two on the list. That’s fine. You should read the whole list!

The benefits of teaching philosophy

When I took my Virtues education course from the University of Brighton, it was comforting to know I was in the company of friends (virtually, since it was an online course). After having spent several years battling against people who saw the liberal arts as a burden, it was a breath of fresh air. They have studied it and firmly believe that, specifically in this case, teaching philosophy had several positive benefits for students.

Imagine that. Learning about new ways of thinking and expressing yourself.

More than 3,000 kids in 48 schools across England participated in weekly discussions about concepts such as truth, justice, friendship, and knowledge, with time carved out for silent reflection, question making, question airing, and building on one another’s thoughts and ideas.

George Martin, the fifth Beatle, RIP

A sad day in music history as George Martin passes away. More from the BBC.

Music – we celebrate with it and mourn with it.

“He also made much use of recording different tracks at various tape speeds to change the texture of the final sound, a technique used to good effect on Lucy in the Sky.”

Here’s to a technical and artistic titan of pop.

The Encounter

Why good headphones matter.

Simon McBurney brings the tale to life on stage with a bravura one-man performance punctuated by shifting soundscapes. Gradually the human fascination of National Geographic photographer Loren McInyre’s interaction with the tribe and immersion in the jungle gives way to a mind-opening array of spiritual significance, plumbing the very depths of civilisation.

The extraordinary story-telling technique is matched by a truly astounding story.
